Adult Technique Class — Drawing Foundations: Still Life & Sketching

Develop confidence in observational drawing while exploring the foundations of still life sketching in this relaxed and supportive adult technique class. Throughout June, students will focus on learning how to simplify complex objects into manageable shapes, improve proportions, and better understand the relationship between light and shadow.

Using a curated still life arrangement as inspiration, participants will experiment with graphite, charcoal, smudge sticks, and contrast techniques to create expressive tonal drawings while building practical sketching skills and visual awareness.

This class is ideal for beginners wanting to strengthen their foundations, as well as practicing artists looking to refine their observational drawing techniques.

In This Class You Will Explore:

• Sketching and observational drawing techniques
• Simplifying objects into basic shapes
• Understanding proportions and composition
• Recognising light and shadow
• Creating contrast and tonal depth
• Working with graphite and charcoal materials
• Blending and mark-making techniques using smudge sticks

Participants are encouraged to bring their own art journal or visual diary to build an ongoing collection of studies and techniques. Journals are also available to purchase in the studio for $10 each, and existing students are welcome to continue using their studio journals.

All other tools and materials are provided.
